U.S. 34 Mississippi River Bridge in Burlington closed due to
possible damage from an overnight barge collision

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) is currently not allowing traffic on the U.S. 34 Mississippi River Bridge in Burlington Iowa due to possible damage when sections of a barge broke loose upstream and came into contact with the bridge.

Traffic needing to cross the Mississippi River is being detoured to the Davenport , Muscatine , Fort Madison or Keokuk bridges.

Iowa Department of Transportation bridge inspectors will be onsite today to assess any possible damage from the collision with at least two sections of the loaded barge.
